logrotate scripts attempt to rotate non-existent log files

Description

/etc/logrotate.d/chef-server-webui tries to rotate /var/log/chef/merb-webui*log, but no such logs exist. The result is the following email from cron every day:

/etc/cron.daily/logrotate:
error: stat of /var/log/chef/merb-webui*log failed: No such file or directory
run-parts: /etc/cron.daily/logrotate exited with return code 1

additionally, the chef-server and chef-server-api packages appear to create /etc/logrotate.d/chef-server and /etc/logrotate.d/chef-server-api, both of which have the same contents. this results in annoying messages from cron every day:

/etc/cron.daily/logrotate:
error: chef-server-api:1 duplicate log entry for /var/log/chef/server.log
error: found error in /var/log/chef/server.log /var/log/chef/merb*log , skipping

I experience this in chef-server-webui 0.10.4 on Ubuntu lucid. Package is the .deb installed from the opscode apt repo, version 0.10.4-1.

Version 0.8.10-2 intended to fix this by adding "missingok" directive, but unfortunately inside "postrotate" script.

Please pull https://github.com/tmatilai/opscode-packages/tree/CHEF-1247 for a fix.

Fyi, a Debian changelog item is not added.

I'm still experiencing the same problem with chef-server 0.10.8-1 on Debian.
Could the proposed change above (https://github.com/tmatilai/opscode-packages/commit/c33a321245899773508a74bc7273c394c11d48fc ) be merged in the next Chef server package?

This problem still exists on Debian Squeeze. The reason seems to be clear for me:

$ grep -ri "merb" /etc/logrotate.d/
/etc/logrotate.d/chef-server-api:/var/log/chef/server.log /var/log/chef/merb*log {
/etc/logrotate.d/chef-server-webui:/var/log/chef/server-webui.log /var/log/chef/merb-webui*log {

Both files will match /var/log/chef/merb-webui.log, hence the error message.

To fix the error, I suggest to change /etc/logrotate.d/chef-server-api like this:

- /var/log/chef/server.log /var/log/chef/merb*log {
+ /var/log/chef/server.log /var/log/chef/merb.*.log {
