Can we add to the default settings file a "ONBOOT=yes/no" flag.

If you're running chef from cron this is very handy.

I would rather this was not changed. If you don't want to start it on boot, change the links in /etc/rc2.d/ (just remove one of them). That will also prevent confusion which will happen when the admin does /etc/init.d/chef-client start and nothing happens.

The /etc/default files are used to configure the init scripts in the latest packaging. After deliberation and conversation with Tollef on the ONBOOT, it will not be used, as Debian-packaged services prefer to use the init script instead of a cron job.
